Running and Recycling Bins

Posted by Kristin

I don't know what it is but I always find free stuff while I'm out running. And last Friday was no different. It started off as a rainy morning but I still felt the itch of  "Go running. You should go running." So I listened to that nagging voice and went for a run despite the rain.

It always starts with a run...

Now a little background info. I recently took on the task of overhauling some major furniture in my dining room. Think bright turquoise paint, sandpaper, walnut stain, and lots of elbow grease. Oh and also know that Friday is recycling day in my neighborhood.

Here's a quick sneak peak at what my elbow was greasing.

As I was running, I was thinking about how I wanted to set up the dining room and all I kept envisioning was crisp white dishes. I was thinking about the stash of white dishes I had at my home and thinking it was a bit thin when suddenly I ran past a recycling bin full of white milk glass dishes. Hollah! Hallelujah! Thank you Jesus! Hmm, anything else to say here? I think that covers it.

The exciting finds I ran by.

I scoped out the scene: no one really around, the house that the recycling bins belonged to looked relatively quiet with no cars in the driveway, and the milk glass wasn't really visible unless you walked right by. This meant that the likelihood of someone else stealing my treasures taking the milk glass was low if I waited until after my run to pick them up (because so many other people dig through recycling bins like me).

So I sped up my run, raced up the stairs to grab my car keys and camera, and drove off to grab the dishes.  Fortunately the milk glass was still there (I was really worried about that), so I pulled over, snapped a few pictures, grabbed the goods, and sped off. (Actually I slowly pulled back out into the road and had to turn around in a nearby driveway to head home, but I still felt like I had completed some kick-arse mission).

The goods in all their glory.

Here's what I took home (and yes, I nixed the ones with yellows stains...hello nicotine!).

After a good cleaning, the milk glass now sits happily on the shelves of my newly painted hutch (a post on that coming soon) and really pops against the turquoise color. So I guess the lesson is, go running when you're supposed to because you never know what treasures await you.

White, turquoise, and red spells mmmmmmm.

Another little spot for my free milk glass goods.

Happy running and recycling bin-digging!
